Seattle Archdiocese Spews Some Nonsense, Saying Eastside Catholic School Had “No Intention to Be Discriminatory” when it Fired a Gay Employee who Married his Partner

A group of protestors hand-delivered a petition with nearly 21,000 signatures yesterday to the Archdiocese of Seattle, and received a surprise in-person response from a church spokesperson.

The petition and protesters oppose the firing of a popular gay Vice Principal, Mark Zmuda, from Eastside Catholic School; the school asked Zmuda to leave after learning he had married his male partner.

In the video, a spokesperson for the Archdiocese, Greg Magnoni, speaks to the protestors, claiming among other things that the school “had no intention to be discriminatory toward anyone.”

Supporters of fired gay Catholic school teacher Ken Bencomo are planning a 9:00 a.m. (PDT) protest this morning at St. Lucy’s Priory High School in Glendora, California. The school fired Bencomo, who had taught at St. Lucy’s for 17 years, shortly after he married his same-sex partner.

The protest’s Facebook page calls on those who attend  to “[c]ome with powerful voices, ready to sing our Alma Mater and show the [school] administration — ‘We Are That Change!'” The page urges participants to “be respectful and mindful of the values instilled in us,” adding that “Mr. B always demanded that we act with class, [let’s] make him proud.” [Click here for an August 9 update.]
